Mountains are memories ...
The story of mountains may be set in stone but they reveal change we can scarcely imagine. Extinctions, volcanoes, dinosaurs ... we all know they existed but how are ancient worlds and their inhabitants connected to us today? Take a journey through deep time, to a place long ago where the bones of kunanyi/Wellington were formed from the remains of a frozen sea. Not all that is ancient is lost ... |
Before the Mountain had a Name tells the 300 million-year-old story in the geology of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. It
is the story of our continent as it separated from Gondwanaland to become the land we know today.
Designed to function on many levels, Before the Mountain had a Name may be read simply as a picture book. For readers who wish to delve deeper, it contains a large amount of information in detailed illustrations. A number of geological themes are explored, including stratigraphy, continental drift, landscape formation and extinction. Additional material, links and activities to assist in decoding the illustrations, including information about the animals and plants from each period and the fossil formations they come from, are provided in the resource section of this web page (coming soon). Both the book and online resource pay special attention to the information we don’t have, emphasising the need for future scientists to keep looking.
Before the Mountain had a Name will be available in store and online from Forty South Publishing in May 2024.
